Malaria is an endemic disease in most part of Africa. Majority of the illness many patients in these countries complain about is malaria.
Malaria is a protozoan disease that is transmitted by the female anopheles mosquito through bites. Through mosquito bites, the parasites (plasmodium) is introduced into the bloodstream and it infects the red blood cells. The symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, nausea, etc.
In the treatment of malaria, many things have changed. From the old use of quinine and the present use of the combination of artemether-lumefantrine. With these developments in the treatment of malaria, it is necessary to take note of certain things that can limit the potency of the antimalarial drug you are taking.
Avoid Citrus Fruits: Fruits that belong to the citrus family should not be taken alongside with your anti-malaria drug. It reduces its effectiveness because it contains vitamin C ( Ascorbic acid). So both the natural form of ascorbic acid found in citrus fruit and the artificial one sold in in orange or white colour should not be taken alongside with antimalarial drug.
Avoid Moringa: This is surprising right? However, it is true! Do you know that moringa contains seven times more vitamin C than oranges and three times more iron than roast beef? This a wow benefit but when it comes to its relationship with treating malaria, they are enemies. You can take them after malaria is gone.
Avoid Grapefruit Juice: Grapefruit juice has the tendency to increase the amount of artemether in the blood. When artemether-lumefantrine is taken with grapefruit juice, the grapefruit juice makes the artemether to build up in the body, which can create mixed effects such as chest pain, fatigue, and muscle pain, etc. There is a clear and strong warning against this combination.
7UP is not necessary: It is a common belief among people that 7up is good for treating malaria but this is not so. Using sodas and soft drinks like 7UP is not necessary and do not help to fight the sickness.
To fight and protect yourself against malaria, you need to use ensure there are not empty, open containers of water which can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, use mosquito treated net, use of insecticides etc.
