Simple Ways To Manage Heartburn During Pregnancy

Heartburn is one of the most common pregnancy induced symptoms that plagues a pregnant woman and they can be very uncomfortable. Heartburn usually occurs during pregnancy because the hormone relaxin meant to relax the ligaments in the pelvis and softens and widens the cervix also relaxes the stomach valve responsible for keeping the stomach acid out of the esophagus. In addition to this the growing uterus crowds the stomach thereby forcing stomach acid into the esophagus.

Although Heartburn is almost inevitable during pregnancy, according to, there are several ways to soothe heartburn during pregnancy so the mum to be does have to suffer from this symptom.

  • Eat Small Meals and Eat Slowly- An overly stuffed stomach can contribute to heartburn. Instead of three square meals a day, try five or six smaller ones. Rushing your food or eating very fast can cause heartburn, so when eating pace yourself, take your time and enjoy your food this would even stop you from overeating.
  • Drink Lots of Water - Water will keep you hydrated thus preventing heartburn. So, do not wait until you are tasty before you gulp water. Importantly, know that there is no substitute for water but try to get most of your fluid intake by drinking beverages between, rather than during, meals.
  • Don't lie down Immediately After Meal - After a meal, take a leisurely walk, do a little housework, sit down and read a book, don't just lie down, and don't do anything that requires you to bend over. Because lying down or bending down can help wash acid back up into your esophagus. Try not to eat for at least three hours before you go to sleep. You should also try to avoid liquids a few hours before bedtime. When sleeping make sure your head and upper chest elevated to keep the stomach acid out of your chest.
  • Wear Loose-fitting Clothes - Wearing tight clothing is only going to put more pressure on your already crammed abdomen, and could possibly worsen acid reflux. Opt for the loose-fitting maternity wear, especially if you're trying to stamp out heartburn.

Take note of what triggers your heartburn and try to avoid it. You can also try using ginger although there are no scientific researches backing this people have claimed that ginger helps soothe heartburn. Take note that before using any antacids or medication consult your doctor for the best medication to use. If you still experience heartburn after taking all the precautions, inform your doctor he/ she would be in the best position to help you.
