To celebrate the 2019 World Breastfeeding Week, Mamalette is running a contest themed ‘Male Champions of Breastfeeding’.
Breastfeeding is one of the best investments in saving lives and improving the health, social and economic development of individuals and nations.
In Nigeria, breastfeeding is universal with almost all babies being breastfed. However, the practice of exclusive breastfeeding is rare with only 17% of children younger than six months being exclusively breastfed.
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week #WBW2019 slogan “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding” was chosen to be inclusive of all types of parents in today’s world. Focusing on supporting both parents to be empowered is vital in order to realise their breastfeeding goals.
Although breastfeeding is the mother’s domain, with close support from fathers breastfeeding improves. To enable breastfeeding we all need to protect, promote and support it. Breastfeeding is a team effort.
