Pregnancy Week 20

Your baby this week

By 20 weeks your baby’s skin is covered in a white, greasy substance called vernix. It’s thought that this helps to protect the skin during the many weeks in the amniotic fluid.

Your baby is already practicing for his/her first breath outside the womb, moving his/her chest up and down as if he/she were breathing through the nose. The genitals are now fully formed.

By this week your baby weighs just over 300 grams and measures approximately 26 cm long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel.

Your body this week

At 20 weeks pregnant, you’re halfway through your pregnancy. You will probably feel your baby move for the first time. Most mothers feel these movements between week 17 and week 20.

Pregnancy hormones and increased circulation may cause your nails to appear stronger your hair, thicker and fuller than usual. Note that these are temporary changes.

Other common pregnancy symptoms noticed this week may include;

  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Occasional headaches
  • Tiredness and lack of sleep
