Pregnancy Week 18

Your baby this week

Your baby is at about five and a half inches long and seven ounces in weight by now. This is probably large enough for you to feel him/her twisting, rolling, kicking, and punching around in your womb. Your baby is also developing yawning, swallowing, sucking and hiccupping skills as well as a unique set of toe and fingerprints.


Your body this week

At this stage your uterus lies just south of your navel, causing your body’s center of gravity to shift, pulling the lower back forward and pushing the abdomen out . As your uterus grows and shifts your center of gravity, you may feel slightly off balance.

Lower back pain is a common complaint at this stage as the pregnancy hormone relaxin, loosens your joints and wreaks havoc on your muscles and ligaments.

Don’t be alarmed when you feel sharp pains running from the top of your uterus down to your pubic bone. Your ligaments are stretching to support the growing weight of your womb. The feeling should pass if you lie on your side with a pillow supporting your belly.
